Click here and when ordering more than one urn use Discount Code FAMILYPROGRAM at checkout for 10% off your order.

Pre Need (making plans in advance) - Many people are interested in taking care of plans ahead of time. The Eco Scattering Urn can be purchased in advance for yourself or a loved one. The urn has no expiration, and, although it is all natural and biodegradable, it will not biodegrade unless it is placed in the ground and exposed to soil and moisture.  Therefore, it can be stored safely for many years before use (as long as desired).

Eco Friendly & Biodegradable - The Eco Scattering Urn is 100% all natural and biodegradable, made entirely from beautiful bamboo. Bamboo is a sustainable resource and happens to be one of the most environmentally friendly building materials on the planet!

Although it is biodegradable, it will not biodegrade unless it is placed in the ground and exposed to soil and moisture. Therefore, it can be used to scatter ashes right away or it can be used as a regular urn to hold ashes for as many years as you like before scattering. After scattering, you can keep it as a keepsake or repurpose for other uses if you like. Or, since it is made of bamboo and biodegradable, it can be disposed of in nature when you're finished scattering, if desired.

Travel Friendly, TSA Compliant - All of our urns are easy to travel with and are TSA permissible.  They are made from biodegradable materials and can therefore be “X-Rayed” (TSA prohibits traveling with urns made from metal or other materials that cannot be “X-Rayed”). In addition, each Eco Scattering Urn comes with strong, hand sewn, 100% premium cotton, bag / sleeve, convenient for traveling.

We have many families contact us interested in combining the ashes of a couple into a single Large Eco Scattering Urn. Are scattering urns containing ashes TSA compliant?

Most scattering urns that are made from bamboo, paper, or other biodegradable materials are TSA complaint and can be taken through security at an airport. This includes the Eco Scattering Urn and Eco Water Urn

Does the age of ashes matter for scattering?

No, ashes of any age can be scattered.

Can I scatter ashes at multiple locations?

Yes, many families choose to scatter the ashes of a loved one (or pet) at more than one meaningful or beautiful location and this is becoming quite popular. To do this, you can have multiple smaller scattering urns and use each one to scatter a portion of the ashes at a different place. Alternatively, you can use an urn such as the Eco Scattering Urn that enables you to scatter a portion of the ashes at one location, then re-secure the remaining ashes in the urn to scatter at another location or other locations.

How do I load the ashes into a scattering urn?

Many funeral directors or cremation service providers will load the ashes into an urn of your choice after a cremation is performed. If your loved one or pet was cremated weeks, months, or years ago and you want to transfer the ashes to a scattering urn from another urn or container, this is typically a simple and straightforward process. Most scattering urns come with step-by-step instructions on how to load ashes into the urn. If you find this to be a challenge, enlist a friend to help or reach out to your local funeral director.

How can I scatter ashes?

There are many ways to scatter ashes. This includes the following:

Casting: with casting, ashes are scattered into the air and only travel a few feet from the person scattering. Be sure to check wind conditions prior to casting and always scatter downwind to avoid having the ashes blow back on you. One of the most popular scattering urns used in casting is called the Eco Scattering Urn and can be purchased online or at most funeral homes nationwide.

Floating: This is often referred to as a water burial or scattering at sea and is becoming more and more common throughout the world. One of the most popular urns for this method is the patent pending Eco Water Urn.

Trenching: with trenching, ashes are buried in the ground - many people will simply pour them in the earth or bury them in a biodegradable burial urn. Sometimes families will also scatter on the ground and use a rake to spread and bury.

Is it legal to scatter ashes?

There are very few laws in place throughout the U.S.related to scattering ashes. However, it is always recommended to check with state and also local city or county government offices to find out if there are any restrictions or regulations where you plan on scattering.

If you plan on scattering in a National Park, be sure to check with the park ranger’s office to find out if any regulations exist and get a permit when necessary.

If you plan on scattering at sea (commonly referred to as a water burial, or burial at sea), then it is important to understand the rules stipulated by the Federal Clean Water Act, which includes scattering ashes at least 3 nautical miles from shore and using biodegradable items in the scattering (in other words, do not leave behind a plastic or metal container). Also, it is required that the EPA is notified within 30 days of scattering ashes at sea.

What is a scattering ceremony?

Scattering ceremonies are services that families hold either before, during, or after a scattering occurs and typically take place at the location (or locations) where their loved one’s ashes are scattered. These are becoming more and more common throughout the U.S. and can be as formal or informal as a family prefers. This is a time when family and friends can come together and reflect on a loved one who passed. The ceremonies also commonly include having people who are present take turns scattering.

What to say while scattering ashes?

There are many beautiful quotes and other sayings that can be read before, during, or after a scattering is performed. Click here to see a list of some of the most common ones.

We developed the patented Eco Scattering Urn to fill the void in the market for truly eco-friendly and affordable scattering urns for ashes and scattering tubes for ashes. There are many urns for scattering ashes but Eco Scattering has important differences and is a truly unique urn for scattering ashes.

The Eco Scatttering Urn is the first and only bamboo scattering urn on the market. One main difference between our scatter urn and others is that it is designed specifically for that purpose. Other options available include wooden boxes and paper boxes that are sold as urns for scattering ashes outdoors.  While they may be called ash scatter urns they are simply boxes with lids that can be removed resulting in a large opening, like any container, not necessarily a container for scattering ashes or a container for spreading ashes outdoors. They are not designed specifically to make scattering ashes easier or more dignified. Other options include cardboard tubes with a design screen printed on the surface such as the ocean sunset scatter tube which is made from a cardboard material and is therefore not very eco-friendly, especially when it is screen printed. They are also loaded by sliding one piece inside the other and require gluing which makes it a little complicated and involves extra work.  Furthermore, these products require that the user pop out the center of the hole when it is time to scatter and this limits what the customer can do as with that scatter urn it can be a challenge to scatter the ashes in multiple places.  Having the hole in the center makes it a challenge to release all of the cremated remains out of the scatter tube. The Eco Scattering Urn was designed to overcome all of these disadvantages and to offer a truly ecofriendly alternative.

To accomplish this we created a patented product with special design features and made it out of bamboo, which is one of the most eco friendly building materials on the planet. Bamboo is considered a grass and after it is harvested it grows back quickly in a short period of time. Wood, by comparison, takes much longer to grow back once it is cut down for use, in general. Cardboard, which other products are made from, is processed timber using large amounts of energy and chemicals.  Even though the Eco Scattering Urn is made from bamboo it looks like a wood scattering urn and many people consider it as such. Another feature of the patented Eco Scattering Urn is that the top can be locked into an open and a closed position with a birch wood locking pin. This allows the user to easily secure the ashes in the urn. The urn can then be stored for days, weeks or even years before scattering. When the user is ready to scatter ashes, they simply pull the locking pin out and rotate the top into the open position and then place the locking pin back in to lock the top in the open position. This answers the question of how to open a scattering urn for families. This truly unique feature allows families to scatter cremated remains at multiple places by multiple people with ease as it can be easily resealed and secured. Also, the opening is carved out of the corner of the top so ashes can be dispersed with control and also so it is easy to empty the urn of all the ashes when scattering.

Because the patented Eco Scattering Urn is made from bamboo, an environmentally friendly, natural and biodegradable material, the family has more options as they can place it in the water, leave it in the forest or bury it in the ground without causing any harm. The Eco Scattering Urn can also serve as a water urn for water burials at sea or in a lake or river.  The Eco Scattering Urn is TSA compliant and is considered a flight ready urn as it is made only from from bamboo and a birch wood pin and can therefore be X-Rayed.

The eco Scattering Urns come in three sizes – the large size is designed for a full set of a single persons remains. These are called a scattering urn for a full set of ashes by funeral homes. The Mediums are considered scattering urns for splitting up the ashes in two portions (two mediums have the volume of one large).  And the smalls are considered small urns for scattering ashes and they are designed for families splitting the remains into more than two (four smalls have the volume of one large). Many families will split up the ashes and buy multiple eco scattering urns so all of the siblings or family members will have remains to scatter. Many families will also buy the small Eco Scattering urn to serve as a keepsake urn so they can keep a small portion of the ashes. Even though Eco Scattering Urns are biodegradable, they can be used as permanent keepsake urns and will not biodegrade unless buried or if the scatter urns water immersed.

The Eco Scattering Urn is a great choice for families looking for special ideas for scattering ashes.  Some of the ideas we have heard families share are scattering ashes in California or scattering ashes in Florida or scattering ashes in Myrtle Beach or scattering ashes in the Mississippi River or scattering ashes in National Parks or elsewhere. Different parts of the country have different rules on scattering cremated remains with a cremation ash spreader and we therefore advise families to look into the rules and regulations and seek permission whenever necessary.
