How the Eco Water Urn Works
Once the Eco Water Urn is placed in the water, it will float upright with the top portion easily visible above the water. The proprietary urn is designed to float upright, like a buoy, for up to a few minutes (time depends on the weight and water conditions). Within a short time, the bottom portion submerged in water will dissolve and release the cremated remains, freeing them to spread underwater. The remaining top portion may continue to be visible for a short time before sinking and dissolving out of sight.
Families have the option to write special messages on the surface of the Eco Water Urn with a marker. The Eco Water Urn can also be easily combined with a beautiful plant wreath or flower leis from your local florist which can fit nicely around the urn in the water. Another popular option is to simply spread flower petals in the water around the urn.

We understand your interest in taking care of plans ahead of time. The Eco Water Urn can be purchased for yourself or in advance for a loved one. The urn has no expiration, and although it is all natural and biodegradable, it will not biodegrade unless it is placed in the water. Therefore, it can be stored safely for many years before use (as long as desired).
Eco Friendly & Biodegradable
The Eco Water Urn is 100% all natural and biodegradable. The urn itself is made from recycled plant materials and cellulose using only water, heat and pressure and without any glues or binding agents. The casing is made entirely from beautiful bamboo. Although it is biodegradable, it will not biodegrade unless it is placed in the water. Therefore, it can be used for a water burial right away or it can be used as a regular urn to hold ashes for as many years as you like before eventually freeing the remains in nature. After use, you can keep the bamboo case as keepsake or repurpose for other uses if you like.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the Eco Water Urn work?
Preparing / Filling the Eco Water Urn
- Remove the Eco Water Urn from the bamboo case and completely remove the packaging from around the urn
- Next, place the funnel provided into the 2 inch diameter hole located at the top of the Eco Water Urn and transfer your loved ones cremated remains inside
- The Eco Water Urn can be used with up to one set of cremated remains. Once the remains are transferred in, check to see if the Eco Water Urn is at least about half full. If it is less than half full, simply add some sand from the beach/shore or fine pebbles until the urn is about 50 to 60% full to achieve the best upright floating positioning (Note: if the single set of cremated remains fills the Eco Water Urn more than half way, then that is perfectly fine)
- As a final step, remove the cap from the plastic bag and press it firmly into place over the hole on top of the urn so it is flush with the top part of the urn and so it completely seals the 2 inch diameter hole.
- Place the sealed Eco Water Urn back in the decorative bamboo urn case for safe keeping while it is stored or transported. Always keep it upright during transport
Placing the Eco Water Urn in a Body of Water
- Carefully lift the Eco Water Urn out from the bamboo case keeping the urn upright
- Write messages on the Urn if desired with a marker and or prepare any flower lei’s, wreaths or flower petals you plan to use in combination with the Eco Water Urn
- Lastly, gently place the urn upright in the water – over the next few minutes your loved one’s cremated remains will be completely freed into the water below
Can I use the Eco Water Urn as a regular urn for years until I am ready to scatter?
Yes, and this is very common. The Eco Water Urn can be used for a water burial right away, or it can be used as a regular urn and hold the ashes for as many years as you prefer before using it to scatter your loved one's ashes. Although it is biodegradable, it will not biodegrade unless it is placed in the water.
What if I want to combine two sets of ashes into one urn?
The Eco Water Urn is designed to hold a full set of ashes (or less, if desired). We have many families contact us interested in combining the ashes of a couple into a single urn. In this case, we recommend ordering two Eco Water Urns and combining the ashes in each urn, so each urn has a portion of both sets of ashes. We also have a Family Program specifically designed for this need, where you can get 10% off of your entire order when ordering multiple urns (simply use discount code FAMILYPROGRAM at checkout).
Are scattering urns containing ashes TSA compliant?
Most scattering urns that are made from bamboo, paper, or other biodegradable materials are TSA complaint and can be taken through security at an airport. This includes the Eco Scattering Urn and Eco Water Urn
Does the age of ashes matter for scattering?
No, ashes of any age can be scattered.
Can I scatter ashes at multiple locations?
Yes, many families choose to scatter the ashes of a loved one (or pet) at more than one meaningful or beautiful location and this is becoming quite popular. To do this, you can have multiple smaller scattering urns and use each one to scatter a portion of the ashes at a different place. Alternatively, you can use an urn such as the Eco Scattering Urn that enables you to scatter a portion of the ashes at one location, then re-secure the remaining ashes in the urn to scatter at another location or other locations.
How do I load the ashes into a scattering urn?
Many funeral directors or cremation service providers will load the ashes into an urn of your choice after a cremation is performed. If your loved one or pet was cremated weeks, months, or years ago and you want to transfer the ashes to a scattering urn from another urn or container, this is typically a simple and straightforward process. Most scattering urns come with step-by-step instructions on how to load ashes into the urn. If you find this to be a challenge, enlist a friend to help or reach out to your local funeral director.
How can I scatter ashes?
There are many ways to scatter ashes. This includes the following:
Casting: with casting, ashes are scattered into the air and only travel a few feet from the person scattering. Be sure to check wind conditions prior to casting and always scatter downwind to avoid having the ashes blow back on you. One of the most popular scattering urns used in casting is called the Eco Scattering Urn and can be purchased online or at most funeral homes nationwide.
Floating: This is often referred to as a water burial or scattering at sea and is becoming more and more common throughout the world. One of the most popular urns for this method is the patent pending Eco Water Urn.
Trenching: with trenching, ashes are buried in the ground - many people will simply pour them in the earth or bury them in a biodegradable burial urn. Sometimes families will also scatter on the ground and use a rake to spread and bury.
Is it legal to scatter ashes?
There are very few laws in place throughout the U.S.related to scattering ashes. However, it is always recommended to check with state and also local city or county government offices to find out if there are any restrictions or regulations where you plan on scattering.
If you plan on scattering in a National Park, be sure to check with the park ranger’s office to find out if any regulations exist and get a permit when necessary.
If you plan on scattering at sea (commonly referred to as a water burial, or burial at sea), then it is important to understand the rules stipulated by the Federal Clean Water Act, which includes scattering ashes at least 3 nautical miles from shore and using biodegradable items in the scattering (in other words, do not leave behind a plastic or metal container). Also, it is required that the EPA is notified within 30 days of scattering ashes at sea.
What is a scattering ceremony?
Scattering ceremonies are services that families hold either before, during, or after a scattering occurs and typically take place at the location (or locations) where their loved one’s ashes are scattered. These are becoming more and more common throughout the U.S. and can be as formal or informal as a family prefers. This is a time when family and friends can come together and reflect on a loved one who passed. The ceremonies also commonly include having people who are present take turns scattering.
What to say while scattering ashes?
There are many beautiful quotes and other sayings that can be read before, during, or after a scattering is performed. Click here to see a list of some of the most common ones.

More About the Eco Water Urn
The proprietary Eco Water Urn is considered a water burial urn or a biodegradable water urn and has become one of the most popular options for sea burials. A water burial is a ceremony when families scatter ashes in water or scatter ashes in the ocean or scatter ashes in a river or scatter ashes in a lake. The Eco Water urn can be purchased here, or at funeral homes all over the United States as it has quickly become one of the most popular biodegradable urn for scattering ashes in water. Some people refer to it as a water urn pod for ashes or a sea burial. The Eco Water urn is completely unique and has some strong advantages compared with other biodegradable urns for water burials, other biodegradable urns used in burial at sea and other options for scattering remains in water. These other options include the biodegradable ashes pillow also known as the pillow water urn or the burial at sea pillow and the biodegradable turtle urn also known as the sea turtle cremation urn and the lily biodegradable urn among others.
So why is the proprietary Eco Water Urn different? First, it is shaped like a buoy and floats upright and is made from a special biodegradable material. The shape, design and the special biodegradable and all natural composition, made from plant derived materials, is completely unique and important for performance. These factors enable the Eco Water burial urn to float in a controlled manner and be visible to the family for a short period before breaking down and completely releasing and freeing the ashes in the water. As a result families can expect a smooth ceremony and predictable performance. The shape and special material are the key as the weight distribution allows the urn to float for one to two minutes after which the bottom will fall out releasing and completely freeing the cremated remains. Shortly thereafter, the top will break apart and sink. This gives families control and comfort knowing the ceremony will be beautiful and dignified.
The other products available for water burials including the ones listed above are shaped so that the weight of the cremated remains is distributed and spread out across a large surface area and as a result, the urn takes longer time period to break down which can make it a challenge for the family to know what to expect. It is not ideal to not know how long the urn will float and this can result in uncomfortable and awkward situations. Some other options like the sand urn and the salt urn will quickly sink and take a long time to biodegrade and release the cremated remains. Another feature of the Eco Water Urn is that families can write special notes to their loved on the urn with a regular marker. This is something that has become very popular with families. The Eco water urn also comes in a beautiful bamboo urn case which makes it easy, convenient and safe to transport the eco Water Urn to water burial site. Some of the other options, such as the ones listed above, are large and awkward to transport. The beautiful bamboo urn case is also a wonderful addition for ceremonies as the urn is displayed with a beautiful presentation and in a dignified manner. Also, with its buoy shape it is popular for families to combine wreaths and flower leis as they fit very nicely with the Eco Water Urn for their water burial ceremonies.
